Steven Steele Cawman specializes in travel and nature photography and has traversed the world capturing images of the great outdoors, breathtaking scenery and the majesty of nature. Steven’s desire to experience new cultures and love of travel has inspired him to see and photograph the world. Steven says his work “takes me to the places in the world that fascinate me and allow me to create imagery of adventure, imagination, introspection and beauty. I’m attracted to strong, simple subject matter that reflects the beauty and mystery of locations and people.”

Steven’s work regularly takes him to new worlds. He is a member of Photographers Without Borders—an organization that partners photographers with international not-for-profits in need of compelling images and photo-documentation highlighting their work—and brings important stories to the world. As a result of his work, he was invited to photo-document the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea program on their 100th voyage in 2009. This incredible voyage began in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and circumnavigated the globe, encompassing incredible destinations such as Spain, Ghana, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Vietnam, China, Japan, Hawaii and finally San Diego 108 days later. This voyage of discovery included unique experiences at sea and in port, in cities and in remote locations with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Rotary International in excursions to some of the most moving and thought-provoking destinations on Earth.

Organic Hudson Valley first met Steven in early 2017 when he received a grant for an Artists Commission from the State of New York for his project Dutchess: Farm to Table, a photographic study featuring the people, places and stories of the farm-to-table movement in Dutchess County. Steven photographed, interviewed and captured the stories of over a dozen local artisans and producers including bakers, restaurants, cheese makers, brewers and others. Selected images from this project can be seen on Steven’s website.
Steven received his BA in English Literature and Art History at Kenyon College, Ohio, and a Masters in Fine Arts Degree in Film from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While in graduate school in New York City, Steven worked as an assistant photographer and studio manager for renowned portrait and fashion photographer David Seidner. There, he helped create portraits of celebrities including Anderson Cooper, Jessye Norman, Helena Bonham Carter and many other cultural icons. Steven’s works are a part of corporate and private collections, and his clients include the Semester at Sea Program, the Consulate General of Switzerland and numerous local and international publications.
