When Parents Deploy: Where Local Kids Can Get Support

Military is not the first thing to come to mind when you think about the Hudson Valley. It may surprise some to discover that among our apple orchards and microbreweries, a significant number of military families call the Hudson Valley home and are waiting to be called to duty. When deployment promises to split up these low-profile families, do they get the local support they need, particularly the children left behind?
I come to this from personal experience: My husband deployed in 2011, and although my two youngest were fine, my oldest struggled with anger, acting out and other aggressive behaviors; failing grades; and dropping out of activities. It was a terrible time for my family and, despite being stationed in Portsmouth, VA, surrounded by military families, it was one of the most isolating experiences of my life.
