Here at SunCommon, it’s our mission to tear down barriers to clean energy in pursuit of a healthy environment and brighter future. Which is why we’re so stoked to see more and more car companies making electric vehicles. (Even General Motors will be offering an electric pick-up truck sometime in the next two years!)
Electric vehicle (EV) technology isn’t new, but over the last five years, the number of EVs on the road has increased dramatically, and international dealers are investing big into EV technology. Why? Because consumers are finally realizing that EVs are the cleanest, most efficient form of motorized transportation around.
When charged with traditional electricity from the grid, EVs produce 60 to 85 percent fewer emissions than their gas-powered counterparts. Plus, there is virtually no maintenance with an EV—no oil changes, fuel filters or spark plugs to worry about.
If you want to go one step further, pair an EV with solar power! Not only is electricity from solar power cleaner and cheaper than gasoline, it’s typically cheaper than electricity from your utility. And an EV charged with solar power is 100 percent emissions-free. Your wallet and the environment will both thank you.
On top of the fuel and maintenance savings an EV provides, state and federal government incentives are also available for EV drivers. New York’s Drive Clean Rebate offers a point-of-sale rebate up to $2,000 on a new electric car, and a federal tax credit could put another $2,500 to $7,500 back in your pocket.
If you combine these incentives with solar for your home or business, you’ll save an even bigger chunk of change. If you go solar this year, another federal tax credit will cover 30 percent of the total cost of your solar electric system at home. But in less than six months, that percentage is decreasing significantly, so now is the time! SunCommon is happy to help you make the transition—we’ll hook you up with solar for your home and help you find the perfect EV for your family!
For some first-hand electric vehicle interaction, join us this summer at our annual Sun CARnival in Red Hook. This free, family-friendly event will give you the chance to ride in or test drive some of the latest EV models. There will also be live music and SunCommon’s solar-powered bounce house. A true CARnival for all ages! Save the date: we hope to see you there on July 20! For more details, visit suncommon.com/suncarnival. █
